Trevor Fitzgerald Speaks at the February Meeting of the FFC Club

Trevor Fitzgerald of Fitzgerald Fishing LLC.  presented some fishing techniques at the February meeting.

Fitzgerald began by presenting the wacky rigged Senko worm on a weightless spinning rig. He cautioned the club members not to disdain spinning tackle. He said that the spinning rig can be very effective for pond fishing. He added that he does not use the O-ring to attach the hook but hooks directly through the body of the worm. He said that the O-ring allows the hook to rotate into a position that doesn’t allow good hook setting.

He then presented a baitcasting rig, which he stated was the go-to rig of Bass fishermen. He had a jerkbait on the baitcasting outfit. He extolled the attributes of the jerk bait when fished in yo-yo fashion, often letting the bait remain motionless for as long as 20 seconds. He recommended a suspending type bait from Mega Bass.

Just a little pricey, huh?

He then moved to the latest bait to find a lot of use among pro fishermen: the blade bait, such as the Silver Buddy.

These prices are more in my range than the Mega Bass bait. From USA Midway

Fitzgerald said that yo-yoing the blade bait was also a recommended technique. He said that pond fishermen would like this bait because “you can cast it a mile, to the middle of the pond”. He noted that they come in weights of 3/8 to 3/4 ounce and that he uses 1/2 ounce baits.

Fitzgerald recommended changing the hooks on all baits because the ones that come on the baits are “crap”. He said get a light-wire hook from Gamakatsu or Owner “whatever you like”. He cautioned against using heavy hooks because they can change the balance of the bait and hence its action.

He mentioned a bait that he and Brian Thrift had developed: Brian Thrift Micro Jig.

These are $6.99 from https://www.omniafishing.com/

Fitzgerald was well received by the membership many of whom gathered about the table at the front of the room to get a closer look at the baits and tackle that he had presented.

It Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This!

Three weeks into the new year and only a handful of fish reported it was looking like January was going to be a total bust. Finally on January 25th two long awaited reports appeard in my mailbox. The first came from FFC member Frank Martines with a 5lb. 2oz. Villages pond Bass taken with a Senko.

Also on the 25th FFC member Chip Austin reported a 7lb 0oz. taken with a crankbait.

Now was that it for the month? Not yet. The following day two more great reports. First to report was FFC member Steve Felix with a nice 6.74lb Villages pond beauty that hit a shiner like a freight train.

Second to report was FFC member Rich Haessly. Rich took an 8lb 2oz. “Trophy Catch” qualifier by bouncing a Rattletrap off the bottom.

Now with just five days left could there possibly be more? You bet! On January 30th FFC member Jim Jones reported a 7lb. 0oz Villages pond Bass that just couldn’t resist a Red-Eye-Shad.

Now this brings to January 31st. the last day of the month. At 6:43pm I received a email from Rich Haessly. In the subject line it read “Stop The Presses” Well is there one last report for January? You got it. On his first cast with a lipless crankbait Rich took his second “Trophy Catch” in just a matter of days.

This one tipped the scales at 8lbs. 7oz. and worthy of the title “Fish Of The Month”

January Fishing Clinic
The first clinic of 2022 was held on January 18th. at the Miona Rec. Ctr. pond. Despite the chilly temp it was very well attended.

January 2022 Clinic

FFC member Jim Jones demonstrated the many ways to fish soft plastic baits. Monthly clinics will be held on the third Tuesday of the month and members can sign up at the regular monthly meetings.

Thanks to all who have reported and sent in pics. Keep them coming.
